TGIF opens with our recent custom cycling cap collaboration with our friends of Road Holland: the makers of excellent cycling jerseys based in Florida. Richard Grossman contacted me requesting custom caps for their Bike Virginia cycle event. It was a success and may I say Jonathan and Richard look supremely dapper in our custom cycling cap paired with their cool Hilversum jersey - that I also own.  We thank Jonathan and Richard!

I have been recruited to work on our Pfaff 96 mechanical sewing machine, we lovingly nicknamed - The Panzer. See photo above - that's me making 50' of custom handmade ribbon for our current order!

We are excited the Tour de France is tomorrow. And, Carolle and I will be up early to watch it live - around 5 AM.


An update on our new cycling cap: Due to unforeseen circumstances we've delayed the launch of our new cap. We planned on introducing it for tomorrow's stage 1 of the Tour only to be delayed until next week!

TGIF: Fondness For Handmade, Saving My Velocity Iron

All of our caps are made with special love, with attention to detail. In fact, we're in a middle of another custom cap order with special emphasis on making this tricolor ribbon (above). And, it's lovingly handmade because we want you to enjoy our cycling caps for a long time. We don't make throw away caps. We like to think we are a rarity in the cycling cap apparel world, creating the haute couture way... to last!

Ironing plays a huge part in making our caps . When we first saw the velocity reliable iron we had to have it. It's been performing better than expected until...

A brown sludge excreted profusely out of it's steam holes ruining my fabric. Horrors! I went online to read up on peoples experience and it was ugly. I was ready to toss it out. But I thought, as a last resort, I was willing to try one thing. I used a technique first used on my mother's fifty year old iron - to fill the reservoir with pure vinegar and use it on full steam until the vinegar is gone. The tap water has iron in it. I boil my water but it doesn't remove the iron. After steaming away the vinegar I steam away two reservoirs of water. To my surprise it works. Now, I have a maintenance schedule of monthly vinegar steaming. And, my Reliabe iron has, once again, earned it's name!

Time Off On The Horizon

On my recent Frfuggitivi ride, conversation was about our cycling cap business and Matt asked me, "Is this what I do full-time?" 

Yes it is. And, we're noticing our little business is becoming busier especially with custom cap orders.  

In fact, the workload has increased so much that we find ourselves working every day. Our plan is to catch some sun this summer and, perhaps, take some time off. Even though we may have to work on some weekends to fulfill production, we will keep business emails to Monday thru Friday only.

Today I received a very cool 3cross Brewing Company tee from Dave Howland of Worcester, MA. He is the cyclist/nano brewer who successfully surpassed his goal of raising funds for his Kickstarter campaign. We are excited to be part of his crowd funding project - another first for us. Carolle and I are now busy working on his custom 3cross Brewing Company cycling caps. I can't show any photos but, I can say they are starting to look fantastic!

FRFuggitivi & Giro: Italian Soul!

Yesterday's FRFuggitivi ride was a cold, rain soaked outing but at our well planned coffee stop I proudly handed over two custom FRFfuggitivi caps to Mario and Brian. It came in handy for Brian. He commented on how well the cap - notably the brim protected his eyes from the pelting rain. Not surprisingly, the cycling cap also works extra duty during times of inclement weather keeping the head warm. Our group didn't ride under our typical Italian rules (no riding when raining) but we did ride like hardcore Italian racers. If we were in Italy, I would like to think that the Tifosi would cheer us on. 

Today, the Giro d'ltalia is a rest day before the final week of high mountains (i.e. Stelvio & Zoncolan) ... so let's admire this collection of maglia rosas!

TGIF: Little King Dutch, Corsa Rosa Will Return & Antipodean Embrace for Our Wool Winter Caps

Lately, we have been receiving requests to make custom cycling caps for kids. Tristan (from the UK) contacted us wanting a King Dutch cycling cap for his son, Rory. Depending upon fabric availability,   the smallest custom cycling cap we can make is size XS (19.5" - 21"). Take a look at our shop for the styles offered. Production time usually is about 2 weeks. Rory is the little King Dutch!

As the Giro d'ltalia is in full swing, it's been exciting racing. Tomorrow is the first mountain stage and it promises to shake up the GC. Jenny is wearing our Corsa Rosa and looks to be set to watch stage 8 (we will too)...

Less than a week before the Giro d'ltalia starts May 9 in Belfast. We are getting ready for one of our favorite GTs bracing ourselves for the upcoming fireworks. It will be mountainous - 9 uphill finishes, 5 summit finishes in the high mountains. One rider that symbolizes the Giro is the Il Campionissimo... Fausto Coppi. He is legendary winning the Giro d'ltala five times (1940, 1947, 1949, 1952, 1953). The mountain classification three times (1948, 1949, 1954) and twenty-two stages. Our new Il Campionissimo cycling cap is a tribute to him... the champion of champions.

The simple tailor shears are one of the fundamental tools in our studio. Today, we acquired a pair from our supplier because sometimes they have to be replace. They wear out, get bent out of true and have to be retire. I would say that they are one of the unsung heroes in our creative studio. 

I want to thank Chris for his review of the Paris-Roubaix cap. Our handmade caps are exactly like a 'custom tailored suit'. Every cap is designed and made by us in our Vancouver studio. We are extremely proud of our newest custom cap for ...Raiment Bicycle Life of Vancouver! It can be best describe as retro style cool. Made from pre-washed charcoal grey linen/cotton to avoid shrinkage. Linen/cotton has amazing properties of durability, fast wicking and comfort. We embroidered a bold red Raiment logo finishing with a red linen/cotton under brim complete with a stunning red and ivory ribbon. They are beautiful and practical as the perfect riding companion on or off the bike. Whilst we make many custom caps world wide it's extra satisfying for us, when we work locally. We love making custom caps. Our latest new addition, Il Campionissimo, was inspired from an Australian customer some time ago. We wrestled with the idea of an all white cap - and decided to go for it. White is a new color for us, outside our comfort zone because we love muted, darker and plaid. But it really makes sense, the summer sun is harsh and riding a bike can be daunting. White is reflective and linen/cotton wicks moisture better than cotton alone and also provides cooling and comfort. The aqua ribbon is near identical to a famous Italian frame builder and cycling star - you get the picture. And, to keep with our tradition a black version is forthcoming.
