FRFuggitivi & Giro: Italian Soul!

Custom embroidered FRFuggitivi cap
photo Red Dots Cycling

Yesterday's FRFuggitivi ride was a cold, rain soaked outing but at our well planned coffee stop I proudly handed over two custom FRFfuggitivi caps to Mario and Brian. It came in handy for Brian. He commented on how well the cap - notably the brim protected his eyes from the pelting rain. Not surprisingly, the cycling cap also works extra duty during times of inclement weather keeping the head warm. Our group didn't ride under our typical Italian rules (no riding when raining) but we did ride like hardcore Italian racers. If we were in Italy, I would like to think that the Tifosi would cheer us on.

Today, the Giro d'ltalia is a rest day before the final week of high mountains (i.e. Stelvio & Zoncolan) ... so let's admire this collection of maglia rosas!

TGIF: Little King Dutch, Corsa Rosa Will Return & Antipodean Embrace for Our Wool Winter Caps

Rory is the little King Dutch.
courtesy Tristan Denton

Lately, we have been receiving requests to make custom cycling caps for kids. Tristan (from the UK) contacted us wanting a King Dutch cycling cap for his son, Rory. Depending upon fabric availability,   the smallest custom cycling cap we can make is size XS (19.5" - 21"). Take a look at our shop for the styles offered. Production time usually is about 2 weeks. Rory is the little King Dutch!

As the Giro d'ltalia is in full swing, it's been exciting racing. Tomorrow is the first mountain stage and it promises to shake up the GC. Jenny is wearing our Corsa Rosa and looks to be set to watch stage 8 (we will too)...

Good news: We now have the material, from our supplier, to produce a new batch of Corsa Rosa cycling caps! We should have a new generation of Corsa Rosa caps well before the end of the Giro - check back soon for the re-launch of our popular Corsa Rosa cap!

Whilst our 3-season cycling caps are popular as ever, if you live in the Southern Hemisphere - namely Australia & New Zealand, and winter is approaching - our winter cycling caps are the popular choice. Our Antipodean friends are embracing...

Viva Il Campionissimo!

Viva la Bianchi! Viva Coppi!

Less than a week before the Giro d'ltalia starts May 9 in Belfast. We are getting ready for one of our favorite GTs bracing ourselves for the upcoming fireworks. It will be mountainous - 9 uphill finishes, 5 summit finishes in the high mountains. One rider that symbolizes the Giro is the Il Campionissimo... Fausto Coppi. He is legendary winning the Giro d'ltala five times (1940, 1947, 1949, 1952, 1953). The mountain classification three times (1948, 1949, 1954) and twenty-two stages. Our new Il Campionissimo cycling cap is a tribute to him... the champion of champions.

Thank you to Italian Cycling Journal for a fantastic review on our Viva la Corsa Rosa and L'Enfer du Nord cap. Angelo writes passionately of Italian cycling and we have a soft spot of all things Italian too.

We made our Viva la Corsa Rosa to celebrate the Giro with a flourish of pink and the Italian tricolor finishing it off with Italian dots!

Thanks Angelo!

Today, we 'test drove' what will become our new sewing/embroidery machine... the new Pfaff Creative 3.0 -  it just arrived in store today!

Compared to our former Singer Fashionmate 257, it's really a world apart. Not only the Pfaff sews, it embroiders to perfection. Sabine, from the Pfaff store in Vancouver, showed me how the Pfaff embroiders my name! The results are truly spectacular the quality is perfect - it's exactly what I'm looking for in a machine!

I'm so excited, I'm preparing my sewing corner!

This is a long weekend for us here in Canada. It's Victoria Day on Monday any holiday is a good reason to celebrate!

We are having a Victoria Day Weekend Sale! That means; 25-40% off on most items in our shop, for a limited time!

Enjoy the Giro and take advantage of our Sale!

TGIF: Thinking Pink!, Singer RIP & Last Words on our Crowdfunding Campaign

Our new cap honoring the Giro d'ltalia!
photo: Red dots Cycling.

We love the Giro!

And, we decided to produce a new cycling cap. This is the prototype, it's black linen/cotton (similar to our Cappello Nero) comfy to wear on or off the bike. It's that good looking. To celebrate our favorite Spring Grand Tour - we sewn in a pink ribbon with the Italian tricolore. We love detail and it's in the ribbons. We could not find the ribbon and we decided to make it ourselves. That means we sew in each ribbon individually. One detail that may or may not make the final design is the Italian tricolore overstitch on top of the brim. Production will begin this week ...Bellissimo!

Bad news on Carolle's Singer Fashionmate.

We finally receive the news that it's beyond repair. It was an emotional letting go.

After receiving so many comments to have embroidery on our cycling caps, we tried crowdfunding and  it was a learning experience. We are now trying to look at ways as how to afford a sewing/embroidery machine to fulfill the perks. Thank you to all who contributed!

TGIF: Indiegogo Crowdfunding, A New Cap & Clowning Around with Cucci Cabana

Emilie Leclerc and Joey Lesperance.
Costumes by Carolle
Photo: James Loewen

TGIF time...

The Giro d'ltalia launches the summer cycling season and we have a new cycling cap on the drawing board.

Carolle's clowning around...

She actually used a cycling cap where no cycling cap has gone before! Her cycling cap is from our basic design made with a special twist for the play, Cucci & Cabana. It's wonderful (look at the yellow cap). She also helped in the design and construction of the costumes. It was fun to see Carolle in another creative light with Joey making costumes. She sure is talented.

Our sewing machine is still in the repair shop and we are still working with a borrowed machine. We need a new sewing machine. There are five days remaining in our Embroidery Project so please take time now to contribute to our campaign and share the word around!

Happy Birthday Ryder!

We are so proud to celebrate Ryder Hesjedal's historical success winning the 2012 Giro d'ltalia by making the Grinta-Cervina cycling cap.

On Stage 14, Cherasco to Cervinia is when he re-took the pink jersey, dramatically, from Joaquim Rodriguez. This beautiful cotton denim cap has special details for the true cycling fan. Pink under brim and argyle stripe and Canadian maple leaf detail on the rear of the cap. Available now in two sizes: Small/Medium (21-22.5") and Medium/Large (22.5-24").

And, what better way to celebrate his Giro success, Ryder Hesjedal turns 32 years old today.

Happy Birthday Ryder!

Oh Canada!

Christmas Update

Andy Hampsten's frgid Gavia stage,
1988 Giro.

We are finally recovering from the worst case flu (we ever had) and started producing another winter cap run.

The winter caps that are in production are...

Petit Breton, Red Hunting, L'Enfer du Nord, Fleche Wallonne and Flemish.

Rotten timing that it struck us during our busiest time of the season. As we see our popular winter cap stocks rapidly depleting ...we have to act.

Sadly, our famous Brits cap is out of stock. One last chance, this Friday, we will attempt to look for the fabric at our supplier.

This year has been overwhelming for our winter caps. The response is amazing. We would like to thank everyone for buying our winter caps. You will enjoy a warm ride this winter!

Ryder: Canada's National Hero

"Once I start seeing my name on the list of other riders who have accomplished this,
it's pretty amazing."

Congratulations to Canada's newest hero: Ryder Hesjedal, the first Canadian to win a grand tour... the Giro d'italia!

He's eclipsed Steve Bauer's fourth-place finish in the 1988 Tour, and he is ushering a new era in Canadian cycling...

"Canadian cycling is at the highest level it's ever been and this will only help."

Carolle and I proudly witnessed this wonderful achievement this morning... and, in a way, our country shifted for the better!

O Canada,  O Ryder!

The New GRINTA-CERVINIA Cycling Cap!

The new GRINTA-CERVINIA
by © Red Dots Cycling

For the past two weeks Carolle and I have a morning ritual...

We're up early, around 5:30AM, cheering on Canada's newest hero Ryder Hesjedal! Becoming a larger than life hero by wearing the coveted leader's pink jersey. He's a source of Canadian pride becoming the first Canadian rider to wear the Maglia Rosa! He's already worn twice.

GRINTA = PERSEVERANCE!

Stage 14 was an epic ride for Ryder on the steep climb to the mountain top finish in Cervinia. Going into that cold and rainy stage he surprised everyone including leader Joaquim Rodriguez by attacking the favorites with 3kms remaining. An attack that worked putting time between the contenders. That day, he took enough time out of Rodriguez to win back the pink jersey and to declare to the rest that he is a contender for GC.

We decided to design a special cycling cap for this occasion. I wrote on twitter that we would be designing the cap and, right away, I receive two twitter messages with interest to buy. Our first prototype was made from black cotton denim. I showed it to my FRFuggitivi group and they mentioned a lighter fabric would work better. Back, to the work table and we decided to change the fabric choosing a lighter linen/cotton for breathability because of the Spring warm weather.

We're very excited to introduce the new, GRINTA-CERVINIA Cycling Cap!

Honoring Ryder Hesjedal's gallant ride up to the ski station of Cervinia to recapture the pink jersey. It's black linen/cotton with special accents: pink under brim with the blue argyle stripe and proudly finishing with a Canadian maple leaf ribbon.

Now available here.

Go Ryder!

Ryder in Pink

Pack leader!

Congratulations to Ryder Hesjedal as the first Canadian to wear the pink jersey!

Yesterday's stage 7, Ryder finished fifth, five seconds behind Paolo Tiralongo sets to keep the maglia rosa as long as possible.
